Tips To Prepare Employment Reference Letter For RPL ACS Skill Assessment

Posted on June 20, 2022June 21, 2022 By Paul Thomas

An effective employment reference letter is a must for a positive RPL ACS skill assessment from the Australian Computer Society.

As you know, those candidates prepare an RPL report who don’t have ICT qualifications. Apart from that, those whose ICT qualifications don’t meet the ACS requirements also choose this way. The authority conducts a skill assessment taking a candidate’s ICT skills, knowledge, and work experience.

An employment reference letter is an integral part of the RPL report for a non-ICT professional. It helps them show that the work experience they have earned is equivalent to one of the ICT degrees.

This document includes your educational background, past work history, skills, and capability. While submitting your RPL report, you must include an employment reference letter. The most important thing is that your work experience must be at a professional level. Simply put, it must be in harmony with the occupation criteria you have claimed.

Things to Include in Your Employment Reference Letter

According to the ACS skill assessment guidelines, your employment reference letter must have the following items:

  • Employment Dates
Mention your employment start and end dates in each employment reference letter. Moreover, you must specify these dates in a DD/MM/YY format.
In the case of’ Current’ employment, you must state the term ‘To Date .’Another thing to do here is to write the date when you wrote your reference letter.
  • Duties and Responsibilities
Your employment reference letter must include all the duties and responsibilities you had in your employment period. Furthermore, you must also ensure that your employment responsibilities are in harmony with your nominated occupation.
  • How Many Hours Do You Work Per Week
It would help if you mentioned total worked hours (part-time or full-time). It has to be at least 20 hours per week.
  • The Country Where You Worked In
Your employment reference letter must mention the country where you worked in. If you have worked in multiple countries for one company, show the specific dates. In addition to that, say the locations where you worked.
  • Author Signature & Company Letterhead
Your employer or someone with authority from your employer must sign your employer reference letter. Include the name, position, and contact details in the reference letter.
  • Certification:
It is a must-do for you to have your employer reference letter certified as a valid copy by an authorized notary.

The things you must not include in your employment reference letter:
It would help if you did not involve generic job descriptions. References without specific details of duties will have an ACS skill assessment as ‘Not suitable due to lack of information.

It’s imprudent to include fake information in your references. It is because ACS is experienced in differentiating between real and fake data.

Don’t include such activities that are irrelevant to your applied occupation.

RPL ACS Skill Assessment Employment Criteria

  1. ACS skill assessment requires the employment to be of a minimum of 20 hours per week and rewarded. The job must show the depth and complexity of your claimed occupation. Apart from that, your salary must satisfy the skills you have earned.
  2. Unpaid, partially paid, or volunteering service will not be worth your employment for skill level assessment.
  3. The employment completed after you have fulfilled the ACS suitability standards will only be skilled employment. Apart from that, the work experience meets the suitability criteria. It will not have consideration for professional jobs.
  4. Multiple employments with different employers for the same period: you can claim only one employment episode if in this situation. Only one with the best outcome will have a selection if providing numerous employment episodes. ACS will consider others as concurrent employment.
  5. The ICT teaching must be at an institution with recognition from the ACS assessment and at the level of AQF or higher.
  6. The research work you have made for your thesis will be unacceptable for your employment experience. You must give proof from your employer stating the research work you have done other than a direct input to your thesis.

Outside Australian Employment Or Australian Employment

Each job period in Australia must have a record separately in an online application.

If the employment is off Australia, it must have a record separately in an online application.

Record the employment outside Australia separately in an online application if you worked for different employers. You also need to record in case of outside Australian employment if having broken it up with Australian employment episodes.

If you worked in other countries except for Australia, under the same employer on an occupation closely relevant to your claimed field, list it as outside Australia employment.

If you worked in countries excluding Australia, then list it as an outside Australia employment. Remember that you should have worked under the same employer in an occupation closely related to your claimed field.

Details of Payment
Your employment payment proof, as per your professional level, must have a minimum of two of the following categories:

Official tax payment document/record

Insurance records for the employment

Payment slip with the name of the employer and the applicant

Bank statements with salary payments from the employer
